BRITISH COUNCILS SIGNS SCHOLARSHIP MANAGEMENT WITH NLNG

British Council Nigeria has signed a £775,866 contract with Nigeria LNG Limited, the leading gas refining company in the country, to manage its post-graduate scholarship scheme.
NLNG has its head office in Port Harcourtand operations in Bonny Island, all in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It has for many years awarded scholarship grants to secondary and under-graduate students within its host community of Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole.
In initial discussions with BC Nigeria, Mr. Ifeanyi Umeh, who is Head, Schemes and Programmes Development in NLNG said the decision to introduce a post-graduate scholarship scheme is aimed at supporting the emergence of indigenous experts in the fields of Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Medicine and Law who, it is hoped, will contribute to the future development of these sectors in Nigeria.
On NLNG’s choice of the UK and the British Council, Mr Umeh said the company recognises the UK’s position as a leader in the provision of Higher Education and also, the British Council’s track record in scholarship management and administration.
Every year, hundreds of Nigerian students apply for places in UK universities but only a small number are able to meet the fee requirements and eventually take up studies. This contract which runs till December 2015 will see 10 young, bright and also lucky Nigerian scholars placed in institutions around the UK in September 2013 and again in 2014.
